Renny Fest Weekend, as we’ve come to call it, always holds a special place in my heart. Every Summer for the last 5 years or so, we pack up the car and head to the Sterling Renaissance Festival. Held in the middle of the woods, the festival features people dressed in traditional Renaissance fashion, speaking Shakespearian English, and putting on several shows throughout the day like jousting competitions, poetry readings and comedy shows. There are also countless old world artisans throughout the grounds, making it impossible not to buy something, since you tend to get caught up in the spirit of things and want to be part of the action. You then of course leave wondering what you’re going to do with the giant wooden sword you just bought… But that’s only part of the fun.
Afterwards, upon drinking honey mead and grogs of ale all day, we stumble back to Holiday Harbor, a delightful campground located right on Lake Ontario for some more drinking and camping. Or in our case, Glamping – because the Dandy does not “camp” in the traditional sense. Air mattresses with memory foam mattress on top of that, a tent that’s larger than most dorm rooms, bottles of whiskey and champagne with sirloin burgers on the grill followed by a sun soaked walk along the beach. It’s a wonderful tradition that we look forward to every year and I highly recommend taking a trip to go to it one weekend, if even for just a day trip. Huzzah!
