With Fall fast approaching, I often times find myself wishing to set the bow ties and blazers aside and revert back to a more rustic, woodsy style. One that embraces not only the beauty of the outdoors, but the rugged lifestyle of the pioneers that once explored the breathtaking region near my hometown known as the Adirondacks.
An old friend of mine and local Albany entrepreneur/legend Matt Baumgartner and his partner Craig Howes of London have teamed up to celebrate this lifestyle with the launch of their rugged menswear line: Howes & Baum. Inspired by the craftsmanship and heritage of durable American and English menswear, Howes & Baum clothing is distinctively designed for men who seek a masculine fit with exceptional detail in a comfortable, functional garment. I spoke with Matt about how the line got started and he had this to say:
“The brand was inspired by the photo on the homepage, which is a photo of my grandfather Anton Baumgartner, who was a logger.
A few years back, I met my business partner, Craig Howes, at a birthday party, and started talking about clothing. We both figured that if we didn’t give this a shot, that it would be something we would later in life both regret not trying.”
Comprised of T-Shirts, Long Johns, Sweatshirts, Shorts and Handkerchiefs, Howes and Baum is rooted in tradition and practically. The perfect accompaniment to those chilly nights sitting by the fire after a long days work. Favorites of mine in the line include the Brixton Hoodie ($175) and Cuttoff John Shorts ($90). Made of 100% Prima Cotton, the subtle cord detailing, thermal stitching, fabric colors and fantastically masculine double ax logo are the true personification of Adirondack Style. Simple, rugged, and built to last.
The adventure however, doesn’t end here. Be sure to check out the Howes & Baum Blog for photos of their lookbook and their Music page which features a seasonal playlist of songs the owners feel best represent Howes & Baum.
