Nice Ash was gracious enough to allow me to attend Gentleman’s Night this past Thursday despite the event being sold out. I’m not a huge cigar smoker, but I’ve always enjoyed a good pipe, so I Dandied up, grabbed my Billiard and headed over.

I had never been in the Cohiba Members Lounge located in the rear of the store, but upon entering I was amazed at the size and elegance of it. Leather chairs and couches lining the walls, an enormous flat screen TV with stereo speakers in the ceiling and walls, pool and card tables, dart boards, and most impressively, VIP Members get their own humidor locker which many use to store not only their favorite cigars, but bottles of their favorite libations as well. One of the Buffalo’s finest shoe shiners was on hand doing his thing as well as a masseuse whose salty one-liners kept the gents on their toes. Everyone who attended received a complimentary cigar and several accessories were raffled off as the night progressed. Drinks were filled and cigars lit by their lovely Cigarista Girl and the hookas were flowing even though most of the gentleman weren’t interested in partaking. I sampled some of their extensive pipe tobacco collection as well as some of the hooka tobacco which had an equally impressive diversity. Every flavor imaginable is available in the store and it was great to have the option to sample some before buying any.

As the night progressed and the NFL Draft grew nearer, it was time to head home, but not without some parting gifts. I won a handsome Punch ashtray in the raffle, and also received some complimentary tobacco samples courtesy of a generous member. It was a great event and I enjoyed meeting some fellow Dandy enthusiasts. If cigars, pipes or hookas are of any interest to you, I highly recommend not only checking out the shop and chatting up their friendly and knowledgeable staff, but also look into become a Lounge Member. Check out some photos after the jump.

Even though it was snowing in Buffalo at the end of April, I’m still trying to get into the spirit of Spring. One of my favorite fabrics during the season is the multi-checks Madras which tend to show up on shorts, pants and sport coats. I thought it would make a splendid addition to the Buffalo Dandy Bow Tie Collection even though the fabric was somewhat difficult to work with. After some re-adjusting and multiple re-ties I got the patterns to where I liked them and ended up with a stellar Spring Bow Tie.

Dockers Reversible Short

Get two pairs of distinct Summer shorts for the price of one in these reversible khaki and madras shorts from Dockers. Part of their Spring/Summer 2012 line, the shorts have a classic D3 fit that sits at the waist and has a roomier fit than the slimmer shorts. But I prefer a more comfortable fit during the Summer anyways and I absolutely love the madras peaking through when the shorts are rolled up.

The Smoking Jacket

Nice Ash Cigars along with Cohiba Lounge is hosting a Gentleman’s Night this Thursday in Depew that I really wanted to go to, but sadly the event has sold out. The night promises all the things gentleman enjoy like cigars, shoe shines, massages, drinks, dart games, pool competitions and even an old fashion Cigarista Girl to attend to your needs.

This got me thinking that a smoking jacket would be perfect for this type of event. One of the Dandiest of accessories, smoking jackets are usually made of silk or velvet, and are specifically intended to absorb the smoke from a gentleman’s cigar or pipe and protect his clothing from falling ash. Reaching the height of its fame in the 1950’s, the smoking jacket has since declined in popularity and has become more a symbol of leisure; being worn most famously by Hugh Hefner. They are harder to find these days and a decent one will cost a few hundred dollars, but really how often do men these days “retreat into a cloud of smoke and congratulate themselves on being masters of the universe”(movie reference?). Still, it would be pretty cool to have one.

Sure Earth day was yesterday, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t do something good for the planet every day. Produced especially for Earth Day, the Bottle Rockets jean from Bonobos are produced entirely from recycled cotton, recycled polyester, and recycled plastic beer bottles (each pair contains between 3 – 5 beer bottles). The fit looks fantastic and their origin will certainly be a conversation starter. Available in both indigo and natural canvas.

Silk Lapel Knots

I’ve been asked a few times about my lapel knots and thought I would share this Dandy accessory with my fellow readers. I decided to go on the hunt for silk cufflink knots after spotting them on lapels in various fashion blogs and magazines. It took a keen eye to notice them, but I’m so happy I did because they have quickly become one of my favorite fashion accessories. Brooks Brothers have a great collection of colored knots, but pretty much any menswear store should have them. They truly are the cherry on top of any outfit, and I now actually refrain from purchasing a blazer if it doesn’t have the lapel buttonhole on it. As you can see below, paired with a simple white shirt and neutral tie, the lapel knot adds a quiet pop of color to any suit. If you’re going to pair the knot with a pocket square or tie, be sure to match it with a minor color so knot to over do it.

My friend and fellow fashion blogger Jeni from Glorious Morning met up with me in Albany this past weekend for an impromptu downtown photo sesh. It was great to catch up with her on things and the weather was perfect. Just in time to test out my new 3-piece linen suit which I recently purchased at H&M for my brothers’ summer wedding. The suit fits great and has some nice details like the pocket watch pocket and lapel buttonhole. Pairing it with some nice pops of color like a brightly colored shirt from Express, a silk knot and a custom pocket square, it’s a stellar look for any Spring/Summer event.
