This Saturday is the Kootsie Ball, a local tradition that began back in 1976 which has been on hiatus since 2004. Back and better than ever, this year’s Ball takes place where it all began: The Hotel Lafayette.

” In December of 1976, some college guys decided that their North Buffalo apartment might be in danger with friends coming home for the holidaze, looking for a party…”

After repeatedly being turned down and told no one does big “fancy” parties anymore, the idea finally came to life at the Lafayette. A bit rundown at the time of its inception, organizer Bill Rupp looked past the torn curtains and peeling paint to see the Crystal Ballroom as a place where Buffalonians could dance the night away in their finest tuxedos and evening gowns. The Kootsie gained a huge following year after year, changing venues from time to time, until it’s final party eight years ago at the Statler. With the Lafayettes’ exquisite reopening, Rupp felt now was the perfect time to resurrect the Kootsie Ball.

This sounds like a truly amazing event, but sadly the wife and I will be unable to attend as we will be traveling to Vermont. But I highly recommend checking this event out as it seems like a Dandy of a time. This years Ball will feature JJ Swing, The Rockaz, Buffalo Swing Big Band, Future Dance Center and Fleuron Rouge. Live webcams will also be set up around the venue to broadcast the festivities online for all to enjoy.

Tickets are $75
