So technically, none of these places are IN Buffalo, we are just using that as a surrounding reference. But regardless, the Dandy family had a series of adventures these past few days that I just had to share and encourage my fellow Dandies to check out while Summer still remains in Buffalo.
First on this list takes the most precedence because it’s ending soon. The 175th Annual Erie County Fair is ending this week so stop what you’re doing and head on over to one of the largest fairs in the country. Stretching over 275 acres, there are carnival rides, games, farm animals galore and some of the best people watching you’ll ever experience. Their beer garden, while initially quite tricky to find, actually has an impressive selection and provided some much needed relief after a day of carnivaling.
Next on the list is for the animal lover/kids crowd, but still surprisingly fun. After being told by numerous parents that we absolutely HAD to go, we spent Saturday afternoon at the Hidden Valley Animal Adventure Park in Varysburgh. For less than $20 you are handed a cup of animal feed and seated at the back of a trolley as a tractor pulls you through the rolling hills of Hidden Valley. Initially you start to feel a bit underwelmed until you begin to see Bison, Zebras, Texas Longhorns and various other wild animals walk right up to you and start eating the food out of your cup. What is so remarkable is you will most likely never be this close to many of these animals in your life and this is much better than visiting the zoo (sorry Buffalo) because the animals actually come up and interact with you instead of just laying there 20 feet away and you’re trying to get a good picture over the wall. Kids love it and the adults seemed to have a pretty good time as well. The grounds where the park is held is beautiful and incredibly peaceful. It’s easy to see why this has become a hotspot for weddings. If you’re not able to make it there during the Summer, check out their website for an incredible Fall Festival that’s coming up.
Last on the list was more of a whim, but again, was such a great surprise, we simply had to share. A short drive out of the city leads you Akron Falls. A popular site with hikers and adventurous youths looking to sneak a death-defying leap off the Falls, this breathtaking spot makes me yearn for those lazy days of Summer just laying by the water, sipping a cold beverage and not having a care in the world. And being young and foolish enough to actually try and attempt the leap off the Falls before the cops show up (which they did) and tell the crowd of 20 or so kids at the bottom that they weren’t allowed to be down there. Oh, in case you were wondering what it’s like to actually jump off the falls, check out this video here.
Hopefully this has provided a few alternative options for those looking to get out of the city and enjoy the Summer while it’s still here.
