Canal Side, first Sunday of Spring, Noon, 22 March 2015

“Spring is in the air!” is perhaps more of a mantra than a reality. Yet time’s winged chariot is hurrying near. Let us roll all our strength and all our sweetness up into one ball, and tear our pleasures with rough strife through the iron gates of life:
Thus, though we cannot make our sun stand still, yet we will make him run!
It is with great audacity that we muster our very own Spirit of Buffalo home to it’s harbor for the 6th Annual run of Tweeds. Don your finery and gather with us Canalside for this heralded bicycle ride to Hoyt Lake for a chance to take home the cheese. Afterwards we plan to warm the Essex St. Pub for a toast.
As always be responsible for your own well being and belongings. Please abide all safe riding recommendations

Invite all of your friends! Everyone is welcome.

189 Public House

Buffalo Whiskey Guild

BWG was recently alerted of new whiskey bar in East Aurora that models itself after the famous Chicago whiskey staple Delilah’s. Naturally, we drove straight there. 189 Public House is nestled right between WNY staple Bar Bill and craft beer Mecca Aurora Brew Works – which makes their location literally perfect for an evening out, or a day trip if you live farther away (as we do, being on the north side of the city.)IMG_0055189 was created to be a comfortable, classic place that people can come to enjoy the fine spirit of whiskey – and that’s exactly what they did. The wood paneled walls, exposed brick and cozy lighting create a welcoming atmosphere that invites you to stay longer than you might somewhere else.IMG_0051

IMG_0019As far as the whiskey, 189’s 200 bottle collection is excellent. Their array of single malts is the best we’ve come across so far in…

ShinolaBlackBlizzard

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. Detroit-based watchmaker Shinola has just released their first titanium timepiece dubbed The Black Blizzard. Inspired by the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and the homesteaders who weathered the storm, The Black Blizzard wristwatch is an emblem of the American spirit—a willingness and determination to overcome adversity. Featuring the turnable topping bezel that Shinola has been using on most of their new watches (and subsequently makes me like them even more) the watch comes with both a titanium bracelet and rubber sport strap as well as a collector’s book about the Dust Bowl. Shinola’s most complicated timepiece to date, with each new watch seems to come an even higher price point. This, unfortunately, remains one of the only reasons I haven’t purchasing one yet. Damn if these watches aren’t sharp looking, though. The Black Blizzard is available in both 42 and 48mm.

$1,500

The Buffalo Whiskey Guild shares their recipe for Spiced Bourbon Hot Apple Cider. Perfect for your upcoming Halloween Party!

Buffalo Whiskey Guild

IMG_3605This simple, inexpensive and deliciously dangerous seasonal refreshment is a perfect autumn, or holiday party libation that will certainly please the masses…

Ingredients: 1 bottle bourbon, 2 gallons apple cider, 4 sweet apples, 10 cinnamon sticks, 10 peppercorns, 1 tsp. of ground cloves, 1 tsp. ginger and 1 tsp. nutmeg.

Directions: One week prior to your party you must steep the bourbon. About 5 cinnamon sticks, the peppercorns and the spices go gently into the bourbon, let sit for 1 week. *Note the changing aroma on the nose of the bottle throughout the week. When ready, pour the apple cider into a large pot on the stove. Strain bourbon into the apple cider. Cut apples into slices and along with the 5 remaining cinnamon sticks, add to mixture. Warm the deliciously smelling amber colored elixir to the desired temperature. Serve with a ladle and a smile.

IMG_2387This past weekend BWG held a Talisker tasting event. We sampled and reviewed three different whiskies from their available line up. Talisker is a remote distillery on the Isle of Skye. Since 1830 Talisker has been revered as consistently producing some of the finest and well crafted whisky in the world. We sampled the 10 year old, their cask strength 57 North and their sherry cask finished Distiller’s Edition.IMG_2400As a whole we rated 57 North the highest of the three, sighting its layered taste and complexity over the others. The Distiller’s Edition scored lowest. We found that the sherry finish masked many of the other flavors we found on the nose and the palate of the others. Talisker’s flagship 10 year old is a very good distinctly flavored whisky. Both on the nose and palate it’s oaky, salty and earthy. Sharp cracked peppercorn is up front throughout. Its…
